I know the answer, but what is the problem? An African math exercise.

While killing time on Pinterest the other day, I found this:

And I thought this to be a very clever idea.   Here is my problem, and keep in mind, as all good problems do, it has some “extra” information.  You will need to discern what is necessary to reach the answer, and what is extra.

Ready?  Good!  Let’s begin!

Your 1100 square foot, 2 bedroom apartment, normally home to one African male, one American female and one hybrid 3 year old is now hosting an additional three African adults and three African children.  The population density of your kitchen generally rivals that of India.  The extra African adult male declared bullshit on this, quickly called a friend and departed the scene for a different apartment.  (ooh, subtraction, did you catch that?)

They originally stayed for five days but have extended their stay for three more. Though you wanted to, you did not weep openly when you learned this.  Your three year old has beaten the younger two visitors mercilessy despite their mother’s admonition “You all are cousins,  you are going to learn to love each other.  If you want to beat each other from sun up to sun down, this is not my concern.”  He missed the irony in that and continued to hit the kids, display every bad behavior known to the preschool set AND spit on his aunt as he walked by her.  Strangely, THAT she had a concern with.

With me?  Good.  Let’s continue.

You have taken them to every event you can think of and afford, so with two days left you tell your husband, “it is your turn….YOU have to get them out of the house today….” mostly so you can clean the unbelievable mess.   He drops them at the mall where they shop for 9 hours, shut Macy’s down at 11 PM and come home with 17 bags of clothes and shoes which promptly get dumped in your previously clean leaving room.  When they come home at 1 AM the noise level raises 25 decibels and wakes your preschooler who went to sleep, on time, for the first time all week. He no longer wants to sleep in your bed, in his sleeping bag or in the Taj Mahal itself.

You have at least 36 hours left.  You are operating on a 19 hour sleep deficit for the week.

That is the problem. What is the answer?

9 Penguins.  Because why the hell not.  It makes as much sense as anything else does right now.
