Welcome to my soapbox

::dusting it off::

Hello there.

I do not care what your political persuasion nor religion, but it seems that everyone has an opinion on the proposed mosque near Ground Zero.  And mostly, I am deeply troubled by what I hear our Congress members and other citizens saying about it.

“Don’t do it because [insert justification here].”  What I hear:  stereotypes, fiction, hatred, intolerance.

All I can think about is this: of the 3,000 people who died that day and the countless others whose lives were forever changed by this tragic event, how many of them were Muslim-Americans? More than one, I can assure you.

Live up to the promises you make in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights America.  It’s time.  Stop breeding more intolerance and hatred.  Isn’t that what caused this horrible event in the first place?  Intolerance. Hatred. Stereotypes.

I’m done now.  Thanks.

  1. Amen, sister. Amen. With the screaming about a mosque near Ground Zero, we are simply preaching religious intolerance, something our forefathers sought to escape a little over 200 years ago. Pisses me off. And Fox News can go suck it.

    I so totally agree the enamel on my teeth hurt! I applaud you!

    I worked as a full-time live in housekeeper for a Islamic family and was going to nursing school at the time…..both of their younger children got beat up at school…I had to change the answering machine message so it would have a “whiter” non accented voice, I had to change the letter of the last name on the mail box because it kept getting eggs and other assorted goodies in it! And why? I was trying to shield them from all of the hate that my so called loving, christian town was throwing at them! I went home more than one night and was sick to my stomach! It didn’t matter that the mom lost a cousin in the 2nd building…..no one cared enough to ask……I just let her cry on my shoulder while she lost ALL of her business that she spent 10 years building up……

    I started wearing hijab to school just to prove a point….that I lived in America and was FREE to wear hijab if I wanted! That shut a lot of people up really quick. And it taught the kids that when someone doesn’t like you that someone one else will be on your side too!

    This is my first visit here (the BlogHer links brought me), and hello? Yes!

    You know what is just breaking my heart? The fact that virtually no one is acknowledging the wounds of the Muslim community. What a terrible hurt, to be painted with that particular brush. I can’t imagine how that must feel, to see such vitriol on the TV and in the streets and, worse, on The Hill.

    In an NPR piece yesterday, there was mention of a church in NC that is planning a “Burn the Quran” event. I feel nauseous just thinking about that.

    Because the two have zero to do with each other. Zero.
