Grocery Shopping to Support the Revolution

From mid March to the end of May I am so busy at school that I really don’t have much time for anything else.

Including my blog.
Did you notice?

I love my blog though and I’m going to attempt to be better.

Tonight Adam and I stopped by the store to get a few things in an attempt to eat fresher food.  Last weekend I watched Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution.  I am astounded that some of the children in that Huntington WV couldn’t identify a tomato, a potato, or pretty much any vegatable at all.

Shameful.

God bless their teacher who then took it upon herself to buy different veggies, label them, and teach them what vegetables at least look like.  Good for her.

The problem with fresher food is that we Americans do not shop like people in other parts of the world do.  If I had to go to the market everyday I would probably go nuts.  Eating fresh doesn’t mean going to the store once every two weeks either.

We bought the ingredients necessary for chicken enchiladas, homemade salsa, and chopped salad.  I forgot half the things I needed and had to back track around the store.  (the salsa is from Pioneer Woman…As God is my witness I will never buy a jar of salsa again.  I think we’ve eaten somewhere around 15 cans of tomatoes since I found this recipe).

As we waited in line, Adam joyfully grabbed at the candy, the magazines, the phone cards and everything else in reach of his busy little hands.

I was tired.

I was cranky.

I certainly didn’t want to cook. Not even salsa.

As the checker was putting the groceries in my cart, an elderly gentlemen whom I had seen earlier in a wheelchair cart at the meat counter, came walking up with a large stuffed animal.  A white chicken with orange feet and an orange comb.

“I just like to win them,” pointing at the machine behind him, “I don’t like to keep ‘em.”  Smiled, handed it to Adam, and walked away.

I thought that was the sweetest thing I had seen in a long time.

The kindness of a complete stranger is a wonderful, wonderful gift.
