I got up this morning and thought about writing something stirringly patriotic. After all, I teach social studies. I am patriotic. I can do this.
Ahhh. I went to the farmer’s market instead.
I LOVE the farmer’s market. I just don’t have enough access to Amish food in my daily life.
I took my favorite date with me:
He has his own stroller, ladies, and he’s willing to go anywhere! Perfect. He isn’t housebroken though…
We strolled through the market. I looked for the Amish, who apparently took the Fourth off, and he looked at the 8 billion dogs who were winding their way through the food stalls. There were musicians for our listening pleasure and heavenly smells emanating from several stalls. I decided that 8:30 AM was a little early for kettle corn, no matter how good it smelled. It was like our own little Fourth of July carnival.
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm…..yes, a huge pile of Indiana sweet corn. I immediately thought of Moosh in Indy’s post on how to cook this wonderful vegetable correctly….as opposed to my method of just boiling it til I think it is done. I loaded up a big bag and also stopped by the stall next door to buy a cilantro plant.
Still no Amish in sight, so I found a different bakery stall to peruse their goodies. I asked for a cinnamon roll and he responded with, “would you like it something, something, or something?” where I’m pretty sure the somethings included sticky and glazed. I pointed silently to the glazed one. It had to be mine.
I was tempted to lay that roll with all its sugary goodness in both hands, slam my face into it, and inhale it right there making sounds like, snarf, gulp, and burp. I ignored my basic instincts, laid it in the stroller, and actually paid the man.
I walked out of the market, admiring my purchases and in particular casting adoring glances at the sweet roll.
When we got home, I lovingly laid it on a plate and photographed it so that I could of course share it with all of you.
By the way, that is not a dinner plate that it is sitting on, but a saucer. I thought I should make that clear.
And yes, I snarfed it down in my kitchen with a big glass of cold milk…then fell into a sugar induced stupor and crawled into bed for a nap.
Now my date and I are off to a friend’s house for cooking out and other holiday type festivities.
What a perfect Fourth!
How did you spend yours?
…

I’m going to have to find out about that market! I spent my 4th trying to run interference in order to avoid a migraine (started having blind spots), cleaned my kitchen sink, emptied out a walk in closet (it’s still empty) in my guest room because Ed’s sister is coming next week, and I have Mass because Mary and I are serving. We are also picking up Ed’s mother to go to Mass and have dinner with us. Of course, it is pouring outside and doesn’t feel like July 4. In spite of all this, I’m actually in a good mood. Hope you have fun at your cookout or cookin as the case may be. The guys in my family have been known to stand at the grill with a tarp or umbrellas over them.
I want that cinnamon roll! OMG…I have to go there….Where and when????
